An emotional tale of family, friendship, love, abuse and racism, The Secret Life of Bees is heart wrenching at its core and features beautiful performances by its all-star cast.
After her mother (Hilarie Burton) dies, Lily Owens (Dakota Fanning) runs away from her abusive father (Paul Bettany) with their housemaid Rosaleen (Jennifer Hudson). Hoping to learn more about her mom, they end up at the Boatwright house with sisters August (Queen Latifah), June (Alicia Keys) and May (Sophie Okondeo).
The film takes place in the days after the Civil Rights bill was enacted by President Johnson and there are some fantastic scenes that show the racism that was rampant.
Fanning, Latifah and Okondeo give magnificent performances. Their characters have heart but show great moments of pain and sadness.
Final say: You’ll feel their love and protection. ★★★★★
