TV: The Golden Girls – Season 1

Premiered: September 14, 1985

On: NBC

Starring: Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, Betty White, Estelle Getty & Herb Edelman

Thirty-four years after its premiere, The Golden Girls remains one of the funniest and most relevant shows on television.

Three women in their fifties, Blanche (Rue McClanahan), Rose (Betty White) and Dorothy (Bea Arthur), along with Dorothy’s mother Sophia (Estelle Getty) live together in Miami and navigate the struggles of getting older together.

As you watch the episodes, you’ll see how far ahead of its time this show is. One of the episodes focuses on sexual harassment in the education system, while another discusses aging women in the workforce. Both are topics that have gained traction now, but weren’t talked about back at the time.

Plus, the show is funny as can be. You’ll laugh until your sides hurt, especially with each of the four women playing their roles perfectly.

Final say: A classic for a reason. ★★★★★
