A gut-wrenching look at the racial divide in the United States from the perspective of one teenage girl, The Hate U Give is a novel that not only entertains, but will also challenge your ways of thinking.
Starr Carter lives in a poor, black neighborhood, but goes to a wealthy and mostly white private high school. When she witnesses her unarmed friend gunned down by a white cop, her entire life is thrown into disarray.
Reading about Starr’s pain while the people at her school have no idea what she’s been through is incredibly emotional. Her internal conflict may be hard to fully comprehend.
In her debut novel, Angie Thomas deals with racial themes incredibly sensibly, while also calling for a change in attitude. Her words are to be devoured and processed carefully.
Final say: An important, groundbreaking novel. ★★★★★
