TV: Atypical – Season 1

Premiered: August 11, 2017

On: Netflix

Starring: Jennifer Jason Leigh, Keir Gilchrist, Brigette Lundy-Paine, Amy Okuda, Nik Dodani & Michael Rapaport

Sam Gardner (Keir Gilchrist) is an 18-year-old boy on the high functioning end of the autism spectrum who is ready, much to his mother’s dismay, to enter the dating world. The story has specific subplots for each of the other main characters as well.

Medical critics have really knocked this show because of its portrayal of autism. Many have said that its not portrayed the way it should be, but I (not knowing anything on the medical side of this at all) would question that. The spectrum is so large that it’s hard to have one correct portrayal.

Gilchrist is fantastic is the lead role as is Brigette Lundy-Paine as his teasing yet protective, older sister. However, Jennifer Jason Leigh’s mom is cringe-worthy and hard to watch in every scene.

Final say: Support Sam in his quest for love. ★★★★☆
