Music: Hold the Girl

Released: September 16, 2022

By: Rina Sawayama

On her second album, Rina Sawayama combines elements of country, pop and rock to create a near-perfect reflection on pain and forgiveness – but in the opposite order.

Sawayama is unapologetically queer in her songwriting and questions the ways adults – especially those closest to her – treated her in her youth. Her songs bring validity to feelings that many within the LGBTQ+ community share. While there can be forgiveness, there’s pain that remains.

The album is a journey and with Sawayama’s powerful vocals, it’s a beautiful one. She sounds similar to Lady Gaga and has the same passion that can be heard whether she’s belting or speaking the lyrics.

“This Hell” is a standout queer anthem that will have you up (line)dancing, while “To Be Alive” celebrates all of the feelings in life.

Final say: This girl deserves it all. ★★★★★
