While the 2011 film compacted David Nicholls’ novel into a too-short film, the series drags it out longer than necessary despite strong lead performances from Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall.

Meeting the night of university graduation, Emma Morley (Mod) and Dexter Mayhew (Woodall) spend the night together. As they age, both face struggles in their careers and love lives.

Almost each episode takes place on July 15 of the next year. Viewers get to see the characters in each year of their lives, which allows for stronger development but gets quite mundane. If anything, Emma and Dexter have too many moments of being unlikable throughout the dull middle episodes.

However, episodes 10-14 tell a beautiful story. If episodes 2-9 were condensed into one or two episodes, then the flow would’ve been better.

Final say: Predictable but the ending is golden. ★★★☆☆
