Following director Sean Wang’s Chinese immigrant paternal and maternal grandmothers, Nǎi Nai & Wài Pó is a charming short documentary on aging and living life to the fullest.

With their husbands no longer around, Yi Yan Fuei (Nǎi Nai) and Chang Li Hua (Wài Pó) have become like sisters and live together – down to sharing the same bed. Both in the twilight years of their lives, they don’t look upon death with fear but embrace the happiness they’ve experienced in their lives.

There’s constantly a fear surrounding aging – almost no matter what age you are – but to see these women who live without regret still acting young in their 80s and 90s is heartwarming. Speaking to each other and sometimes speaking to their grandson behind the camera, you can feel the joyfulness that still surrounds them.
