A fantastic take on the awkwardness of growing up, Turning Red touches on a subject that previous Disney/Pixar films would hesitate to and makes for a beautiful story of love.
After turning 13, family-pleaser Mei Lee (Rosalie Chiang) is shocked when she turns into a red panda when showing extreme emotion. Her overprotective mother Ming (Sandra Oh) reveals it’s a trait passed down in the women in their family.
The film brilliantly explores a young girl’s journey into “womanhood” and the pressures of family expectations while discovering who you are. It also shows the importance of the bond between women – both familial and friends.
Chiang and Oh are fantastic and their voices create the deep layers in their characters while the in-film band 4*Town is the perfect combination of early 2000s boybands.
Final say: Rich animation and storyline. ★★★★☆
