More faithful to its source material than the 2010 film, Percy Jackson and the Olympians creates an intoxicating new fantasy world but needs more energy to sustain.

12-year-old Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell) learns he is a demigod and is taken to Camp Half-Blood by his mother (Virginia Kull) and best friend Grover (Aryan Simhadri) when monsters begin attacking. Zeus’ (Lance Reddick) lightning bolt is stolen, and Percy is sent on a quest to find it.

This season is a wonderful introduction into author and executive producer Rick Riordan’s series. Scobell, Simhadri and Leah Sava Jeffries (as Annabeth) are perfectly cast but the show doesn’t take advantage of the comedy the leads could bring.

The episodes are fun to watch but there are hardly any defining moments that would grasp new fans into the story.

Final say: Not yet god-level. ★★★☆☆
