Inspired by William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, challenging gender norms makes She’s the Man a timeless teen rom-com and sports classic.
Angry that her school cut her soccer team and with her twin Sebastian (James Kirk) sneaking to London, Viola Hastings (Amanda Bynes) poses as her brother to get on a rival school’s soccer team. Her roommate Duke (Channing Tatum) helps train “Sebastian” to get help with the girl he likes.
This film proves how amazing Bynes was as a comedic actress. She brilliantly plays the gender bent role and her slips back into Viola while dressed as Sebastian will have you audibly laughing. She works well alongside Tatum (in his first starring role) who isn’t afraid to break the jock stereotype.
Gender constructs are continually broken down in a way that’s aged well.
Final say: Complex and cool. ★★★★★
