A reinvention of the 1975 series, One Day at a Time is a necessary sitcom featuring great performances and important storylines that’ll have you laughing while crying.

Veteran Penélope (Justina Machado) is a nurse and single mom raising her kids Elena (Isabella Gomez) and Alex (Marcel Ruiz) with the help of her mother Lydia (Rita Moreno). Elena horrifies her grandma at not wanting a quinceañera.

Making this story be about a Latine family allows for conversations about race while also showing how proud they are of their heritage. Elena’s LGBTQ+ storyline is handled beautifully with real reactions.

The main cast is perfect in their roles, but it’s the legendary Moreno who often steals the show. She brings incredible energy and comedy but allows for Machado and Gomez to have their moments in this female-driven show.

Final say: Full of heart. ★★★★★
