Original Los Angeles Cast: Jon Michael Hill & Amanda Warren
Writer Katori Hall brings Martin Luther King Jr.’s final night to life in this incredible play, which makes you see the hopes and fears of the man behind the martyr.
After giving his “I’ve Been to the Mountaintop” speech in Memphis, Martin (Jon Michael Hill) returns to his motel room where he meets mysterious maid Camae (Amanda Warren).
Hill and Warren are a dynamic pairing who both reach many different levels throughout the show. Their work is tiring not just from the subject matter but from the physical act of it, but they never back down. While you’d think Hill’s MLK would be the dominant force, it’s Warren’s Camae that often controls the show.
While the realism is broken as the show continues, it’s message always rings clear.
Final say: Reminds us to pass the baton. ★★★★★
