Focusing not only on the racism from white servicemen to their black counterparts during World War II, but also the racism within the black community, A Soldier’s Play will stay with you long after the actors take their bows.
When Sergeant Vernon C. Waters (Eugene Lee) is murdered, Captain Richard Davenport (Norm Lewis) is sent to the base in Fort Neal, Louisiana, to investigate.
There are many layers to the story you see unfold in front of you. You’re dropped into a time before segregation where black men are still being held back from fighting for a country that oppresses them. Waters’ disdain at the black men around him that don’t act like the white people he aspires to impress shows how divisions were created within the same race.
Final say: A lasting story about our terrible history. ★★★★★
