Film: The Barber of Little Rock

Opened: July 21, 2023

Directed by: John Hoffman & Christine Turner

Featuring: Arlo Washington

Highlighting the financial inequity that black people face in America as a direct result of generational poverty and structural racism, The Barber of Little Rock shows how black people still don’t experience the same freedoms that white people do.

Arlo Washington is the founder of People Trust, a nonprofit community bank in Little Rock Arkansas, and Washington Barber College, which teaches the trades of becoming a barber. In doing so, he’s been able to help his community within his hometown to find financial stability.

Washington’s story is a powerful one with how much good he does in his community. It’s clear that he knows the people surrounding him could succeed if given the proper chance, which often doesn’t come because of their skin color and where they’re forced to live.

Final say: A cut above the rest. ★★★★☆
