Following nearly two decades in the lives of its main characters in under two hours, One Day feels intensely rushed with lack of depth and character development.

Dexter Mayhew (Jim Sturgess) and Emma Morley (Anne Hathaway) encounter each other on the night of their college graduation. Going through ups and downs in their personal lives, they always find their way back to each other.

Hathaway’s accent never lands while Sturgess amps up Dexter’s emotions to where he seems more like a caricature than an actual person. The pair have some chemistry together, but it feels forced into being romantic and longing.

Within nine minutes of the film starting, three years of their friendship is already explored. It feels like whiplash, and you never get to spend enough time with their current selves.

Final say: Too many days, too little time. ★★☆☆☆
