With Kaitlyn Dever’s strong performance, Rosaline is an entertaining modern look at Romeo & Juliet from a different point of view, even if it misses the mark.
Rosaline (Dever) is madly in love with Romeo (Kyle Allen) but when her dad (Bradley Whitford) sets her up on a date with Dario (Sean Teale), Rosaline misses the Capulet ball where Romeo meets Juliet (Isabela Merced).
The film misses the chance to be more comedic by changing the timeline and outcome of its origin story. This gives us a happier ending, though it would be interesting to see Rosaline’s reactions to the actual tragedy of the play.
However, Dever is clever and quick-witted in the titular role. From the first moments of Rosaline and Romeo together, you instantly get the vibe of the film.
Final say: More laughs isn’t a bad thing. ★★★☆☆
