Opened: September 27, 2023

Directed by: Wes Anderson

Starring: Benedict Cumberbatch, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, Richard Ayoade, David Gant & Jarvis Cocker

It takes a special director to take the oddness of a Roald Dahl story and make it into just as quirky of a film which is why Wes Anderson is the perfect match.

Roald Dahl (Ralph Fiennes) narrates the story of Henry Sugar (Benedict Cumberbatch) who discovers a book detailing the life of a man (Ben Kingsley) who can see without using his eyes.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is so quintessentially an Anderson film from its production design to colors and lighting. There’s a lot of dialogue given in short bouts of time with lengthy uncut shots. It’s wonderfully done but can sometimes feel almost suffocating.

All of the actors play multiple characters, but Fiennes stands out the most and provides some genuine comedy in his second role as the policeman.

Final say: Wonderful in most ways. ★★★★☆
