Allowing James McAvoy to show range that should’ve easily gotten him top award recognition, Split is a fantastic thriller that will keep you on edge.
Claire (Haley Lu Richardson), Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy) and Marcia (Jessica Sula) are abducted by Dennis (McAvoy), one of Kevin’s 23 distinct personalities, as he lives with dissociative identity disorder. One personality continues to reach out to Kevin’s psychologist Karen (Betty Buckley) as problems arise.
McAvoy is terrifying, and you can see physical changes as he switches personas. Each personality shown has specific accents, body language and energy, and he perfectly embodies each one.
M. Night Shyamalan keeps the energy intense with disturbing flashbacks of Casey’s life and by creating tense moments between the characters, even if the film may not go over well with psychological professionals.
Final say: One of Shyamalan and McAvoy’s best works. ★★★★★
