A chilling look at white male privilege that’ll have you questioning whether the main character actually exists, American Psycho is a gruesome, genius horror.
Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) is an investment banker with specific interests in skincare and murder. His lust for blood continues to grow strong and overtakes his life, but no one around him seem to notice.
Bale plays Patrick to perfection. He dials back emotion except in highly tense moments and you can feel the insanity he’s driving into Patrick. The film relies so heavily on Patrick’s portrayal that if any other actor assumed the role, it might have ruined the film.
Other than the obvious shudders from the murders, there’s a sense of discomfort the whole film with Patrick continually getting away with his crimes while having psychotic breaks.
Final say: Fantastically bizarre. ★★★★☆
