Though the concept of a movie about the making of a shoe doesn’t sound overly interesting, Ben Affleck creates a fantastic film that’s elevated due to the person and the stakes around the deal.
In 1984, Nike was deciding which basketball stars to bring on their roster when Sonny Vaccaro (Matt Damon) came up with the idea to put all their funds into rookie Michael Jordan (Damian Delano Young). While the company thought the idea was crazy, it eventually turned into ones of the biggest partnerships of all time.
It’s a great decision to keep Michael offscreen other than a few body shots as we know the legend he’s become, and the story is more about the people surrounding him at the start of his career. Viola Davis gives the best performance as his mother.
Final say: Icons were made. ★★★★☆
