Film: How Do You Know

Opened: December 17, 2010

Directed by: James L. Brooks

Starring: Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, Paul Rudd, Jack Nicholson, Kathryn Hahn, Dean Norris, John Tormey, Yuki Matsuzaki, Andrew Wilson, Shelley Conn, Tony Shalhoub, Domenick Lombardozzi, Ron McLarty, Lenny Venito, Mark Linn-Baker, Molly Price & Teyonah Parris

Despite an incredible quartet of actors, How Do You Know never achieves a connection between its characters or its audience.

Lisa (Reese Witherspoon) has just been cut from the Women’s National Softball Team and finds solace in Washington Nationals pitcher Matty (Owen Wilson). However, a blind date with George (Paul Rudd) – who’s just been accused of wire fraud – goes better than she expects.

Though the film is a rom-com, there’s not much comedy there. Wilson and Rudd both have moments that’ll make you smile, but nothing truly laughable. Maybe it’s the writing, but neither of them have moments with Witherspoon’s character that makes you want to choose a team.

It’s a shame that this is the last film of director James L. Brooks and costar Jack Nicholson because it doesn’t show the strength of either.

Final say: You won’t know. ★★☆☆☆
