With a script by The White LotusMike White, the tension in Beatriz at Dinner will make you laugh as you feel highly uncomfortable.

After completing a healing session on Kathy (Connie Britton), Beatriz (Salma Hayek) realizes her car has broken down. Kathy invites her to stay for dinner while she waits where the wealthy and morally questionable Doug (John Lithgow) is also attending.

The first two-thirds of the film are wonderful. Doug has the familiarity of the most toxic white men that we see highlighted in media. Hayek and Lithgow both give layered performances while you’re waiting for them to go at it.

However, the ending will leave you wanting. The metaphor is easy to understand, but it falls flat compared to the rest of the film.

Final say: A dinner I wouldn’t want to be at. ★★★☆☆
