When you think of M. Night Shyamalan, you don’t equate him with superhero movies. Yet somehow, he makes a compelling superhero thriller.
David Dunn (Bruce Willis) is the sole survivor of a deadly train crash. He and his son, Joseph (Spencer Treat Clark), visit comic collector Elijah Price (Samuel L. Jackson) whose theory is that David possesses superhero qualities.
The film has an odd vibe to it from the start. Part of it can be attributed to the brilliant shots Shyamalan captures that make the film look like a comic book.
Jackson gives a strong performance, but the best scene comes with Clark holding a loaded gun to Willis while his mother (Robin Wright) stands by trying to talk him down. The intensity of the scene is unlike any other.
Final say: A different kind of hero. ★★★★☆
