An early attempt at a mainstream gay comedy, there’s so much about In & Out that’s wrong and leans into stereotypes, but that’s exactly what makes it campy and entertaining.

Howard (Kevin Kline) is about to marry Emily (Joan Cusack) after being engaged to her for three years when his former student Cameron (Matt Dillon) wins an Oscar and thanks Howard – notating him as a gay man.

Kline is fantastic as he starts to question his sexuality. His character screams gay in all the stereotypical ways, but he plays them in a way that isn’t offensive. Meanwhile, Cusack is brilliant as his would-be partner. Her breakdown should’ve won her an Oscar.

Though a product of its time, this film – and its starry cast – should be commended on bringing this story to life.

Final say: It’s in to be out. ★★★★★
