Focusing on the point of view of Jessica Chastain’s Eleanor, Her is a second version of Ned Benson’s The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby.

Eleanor tries to commit suicide after losing her son and goes to live with her parents (William Hurt & Isabelle Huppert) after getting out of the hospital. She begins taking classes with Lillian Friedman (Viola Davis), but still needs closure with her husband Conor (James McAvoy).

Whereas Conor’s perspective in Him is trying to save their relationship, Her focuses on Eleanor rebuilding herself as a person. Sometimes this includes Conor, but it’s very much a personal journey of what she wants and needs to do next.

Chastain is heartbreaking and lives in Eleanor’s pain. It’s interesting to watch the scenes with her and McAvoy and how they differ between Him and Her.

Final say: Strong character development. ★★★★☆
