While Divorce American Style has its funny moments, the film never quite finds its groove and suffers in modern viewing with some sexist content.
Richard and Barbara (Dick Van Dyke & Debbie Reynolds) divorce after trying marriage counseling. Richard is introduced to Nancy (Jean Simmons) through her ex-husband Nelson (Jason Robards), who also plans the meeting of Barbara and Al (Van Johnson).
Van Dyke and Reynolds are dynamic in roles that contain comedy but play more dramatic than the actors usually do. But the supporting roles played by Simmons, Robards and Lee Grant (as a prostitute) are what stand out in the chaos of the script.
The final third of the film contains a lot of passing of time, but there’s not much said about what happens within that time. You’ll want more.
Final say: No plans for reconciliation. ★★☆☆☆
