Proving that he could have a career as a folk singer, Oscar Isaac leads a winding tale that doesn’t necessarily have a start or an end, and that’s okay.

Llewyn Davis (Isaac) is a struggling folk singer who lost his duo partner to suicide. Llewyn is broke and sleeping on the couches of his friends, including Jean (Carey Mulligan) who found out she’s pregnant and the child could be Llewyn’s or her husband Jim’s (Justin Timberlake).

Even though there’s not a plot, you won’t care. Llewyn could be a bleak character but through Joel and Ethan Coen’s vision and Isaac’s performance, you’ll be drawn into his story and the interesting characters he meets.

The Coens also create an excellent dreary aesthetic of New York in the wintertime that reflects Llewyn’s current state and personality.

Final say: You’ll feel for Llewyn. ★★★★★
