Falling somewhere in between fantasy and history, Robin Hood is devoid of the fun we’ve come to know from the legendary outlaw and becomes a bland action film.
After King Richard (Danny Huston) is killed in battle, Robin Longstride (Russell Crowe) deserts the war by impersonating a fallen soldier and returning the crown to Eleanor (Eileen Atkins). As the new King John (Oscar Isaac) rises to power, Robin continues to live as Robert Loxley.
The titular hero is often sidelined in this film and Crowe doesn’t bring any life to him, which makes you wonder why his story is legendary. More power is given to Cate Blanchett’s Marion, but the romance never clicks. If anyone is a standout, it’s Isaac but only because you’ll find his King John attractive and slightly sympathetic.
Final say: Doesn’t live up to the character. ★★☆☆☆
