Starring: Meryl Streep, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Joseph Foster & Viola Davis
Powered by strong performances – including Viola Davis’ breakout role – Doubt is a terrifying look into the Catholic church and the men who are supposed to be divine and protectors.
Sister James (Amy Adams) comes to Sister Aloysius (Meryl Streep) with concern that Father Flynn (Philip Seymour Hoffman) may be treating the school’s first black student Donald (Joseph Foster) favorably in an inappropriate way.
All four of the lead adult actors give powerful and inspired performances. When Streep and Hoffman come head-to-head, it’s an acting duel that one only dreams of watching. Davis, as Donald’s mother, appears just twice and only speaks in one of the scenes, but you’ll be hard-pressed to forget about her depth.
Unfortunately, the subject matter is still relevant today even though more priests are being outed for their wrongdoings.
Final say: No doubt about this. ★★★★☆
