Giving the Rocky series new life, Creed is an excellent tribute to Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky Balboa and introduction to Michael B. Jordan’s Adonis Creed.

Adonis, the son of the late Apollo Creed (Rocky’s Carl Weathers), goes into pro-boxing against the wishes of his stepmother Mary Anne (Phylicia Rashad). After moving to Philadelphia, he trains with Rocky and gets close with his neighbor Bianca (Tessa Thompson).

Jordan has an ease with both Thompson and Stallone that makes their relationships seem natural. Playing the same role for almost 40 years, Stallone is a perfect coach but also lets the audience see a vulnerable Rocky.

There’s a strong intensity in both extended fight scenes. The first is a genius one-take shot that makes you feel like you’re in the ring, while the second grows in anticipation.

Final say: The fights are a thrill. ★★★★★
