An interesting story with over-the-top performances, it’s hard to tell if Interview with the Vampire, adapted from Anne Rice’s popular novel, is good or so bad that it’s good.
Daniel Molloy (Christian Slater) interviews Louis (Brad Pitt) in present day and discovers he’s a vampire originally from the late 1700s. Louis recounts how Lestat (Tom Cruise) turned him into a vampire and their later encounter with the young Claudia (Kirsten Dunst).
Cruise feels out of place as Lestat. Though his character is grand, his acting choices reach too far and make him less serious. Meanwhile, Pitt’s Louis broods too much. However, Dunst is magnificent and acts far beyond her young age.
The set design, makeup and costumes bring the film to a higher level with beautiful details that are consistently noticeable.
Final say: An interesting addition to the vampire genre. ★★★☆☆
