Loosely based on real events, The Edge of Love benefits from its strong performances but with the story all over the place, it lacks cohesion.
Vera Phillips (Keira Knightley) reunites with her childhood love Dylan Thomas (Matthew Rhys) during the Blitz in World War II. Dylan’s wife Caitlin (Sienna Miller) and Vera become friends despite Vera’s attraction to Dylan. Vera marries Officer William Killick (Cillian Murphy).
Knightley and Miller are a fantastic pair whose characters stick by each other through tremendous ups and downs. The story would’ve fared better if the focus was mainly on their friendship, but Dylan keeps getting in the way. Murphy also brilliantly portrays post-war trauma.
The film looks beautiful with all the actors seemingly plucked from that period, but it’s not enough to capture interest.
Final say: Not even near the edge of love. ★★☆☆☆
