One of the first films to be shot on an entirely digital background, Sky Captain and the World Tomorrow feels like it was plucked right out of the 1930s with its noir science-fiction.
When giant robots attack New York City, reporter Polly Perkins (Gwyneth Paltrow) is caught in the crossfire. Hero Joe Sullivan (Jude Law) flies in to save the city and find the mysterious Dr. Totenkopf (Laurence Olivier).
Utilizing bluescreens, the actors performed on empty sets as the entire world around them was created with CGI backgrounds. The result is beautifully detailed sets that dreams are made of.
It may a moment to adjust to this world, but the actors will bring you in. Their characters aren’t overly developed but Law and Paltrow utilize their flair to make the most of it.
Final say: A style all its own. ★★★★☆
