An absolutely haunting film, Prisoners is often overlooked but one of the best modern thriller films around.
On Thanksgiving, young girls Anna (Erin Gerasimovich) and Joy (Kyla-Drew Simmons) go missing. Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal) is put on the case but must deal with Anna’s dad Keller (Hugh Jackman) who is traumatized by his daughter’s disappearance and won’t accept that Alex (Paul Dano) is not the culprit.
There are no limits to the extremes parents will go to when their child goes missing, and this film definitely goes to the extremes. It’s difficult to watch at points, but there’s no doubt you’ll be fully invested throughout.
Jackman is incredible as you watch Keller’s downward spiral. Viola Davis shows fantastic levels as Joy’s mom, and Paul Dano and Melissa Leo both bring uncomfortable vibes to their characters.
Final say: A must watch. ★★★★★
