With a sultry performance from Michelle Pfeiffer and the great dynamic between real-life brothers Jeff and Beau Bridges, The Fabulous Baker Boys’ unsurprising story is elevated by its cast.
Jack (Jeff Bridges) and Frank (Beau Bridges) work together as a piano duo called “The Fabulous Baker Boys.” With their act plummeting, they bring on Susie Diamond (Pfeiffer) as their singer. Tensions rise as Jack falls for Susie with Frank disapproving.
Pfeiffer is luminescent with smooth vocals that match her acting talent. She’s fearless on top of the piano during “Makin’ Whoopee,” which makes for the most memorable scene of the film. The brothers use their relationship to give Jack and Frank a natural sibling energy.
The film has a slow, yet captivating plot and it might not end up how you want, but it feels more lifelike.
Final say: Fabulous. ★★★★☆
