Elevated by leads Meryl Streep, Leonardo DiCaprio and Diane Keaton, Marvin’s Room may be a familiar family drama but it’s more than effective.
After burning down his house, Hank (DiCaprio) is taken out of a mental institution when his mom Lee (Streep) learns that her estranged sister Bessie (Keaton) – who takes care of their ailing father (Hume Cronyn) – has leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant.
Keaton’s spars with Streep and carefree attitude with DiCaprio allow audiences to see many sides to her character, which gives her the most levels. Gwen Verdon also stands out comedically as their soap opera addicted aunt.
The script – written by the source play’s writer Scott McPherson – is strong in balancing the comedy and drama. Even though multiple characters have alienating qualities, you never feel distanced from them.
Final say: A heartfelt family story. ★★★★★
