From its uneven tone to its unfulfilling twists, Red Lights is a weak psychological thriller that will leave you disappointed despite its strong premise.
Dr. Margaret Matheson (Sigourney Weaver) and Dr. Tom Buckley (Cillian Murphy) investigate claims of paranormal phenomena. Simon Silver (Robert De Niro), a renowned psychic, makes his reemergence 20 years after exiting the spotlight, and Tom wants to prove him a fake.
By starting the film as a drama with little thriller elements other than what Margaret and Tom are investigating, the intensity switch to almost horror a third of the way through is too strong. It sets the film off-balance.
Weaver, Murphy and De Niro are incredible actors, but their characters don’t allow them to shine – especially in the odd finale between Murphy and De Niro.
Final say: Red Lights is more of a red flag. ★★☆☆☆
