Film: Fences

Opened: December 16, 2016

Directed by: Denzel Washington

Starring: Denzel Washington, Viola Davis, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Jovan Adepo, Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson & Saniyya Sidney

Keeping the same script as the Tony-award winning play and bringing in most of the stage cast, Fences is a brilliant piece of work that deserves multiple watches.

Troy Maxson (Denzel Washington) is a long-time garbage man who has had many setbacks in life. His wife Rose (Viola Davis) but doesn’t like the way he treats his sons Lyons (Russell Hornsby) and Cory (Jovan Adepo).

Both Washington and Davis won Tony awards for their roles in the play, but this is her film. Davis is a revelation, especially when her character breaks down from Troy’s deceit. Washington is great at being unlikable, so Davis can capture the audience’s hearts.

The film automatically jumps into August Wilson’s hefty dialogue, but you’re in for an experience if you can keep up.

Final say: Who says I gotta like it? I love it. ★★★★★
