Despite a breathtaking ending and solid performances, The Unforgivable suffers from a slow burn that just drags on.

After spending 20 years in jail for murdering a cop (W. Earl Brown), Ruth Slater (Sandra Bullock) is re-entering society and hopes to reunite with her now-grown sister Katherine (Aisling Franciosi).

It feels like the story needed editing down. There are too many characters with such little screentime that you wonder why their inclusion was necessary, even if it’s showing how people truly reacclimate to the world. The biggest downfall in this is Viola Davis, who is brilliant but only pops up a handful of times.

However, Bullock is great as Ruth and shows off her acting skills in a role untypical of her repertoire. She’ll keep you invested, even when the story doesn’t.

Final say: Needs forgiving. ★★☆☆☆
