With fantastic off-character performances from Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, as well as a breakout performance from Tye Sheridan, Mud is a masterful coming-of-age drama.
Ellis (Sheridan) and Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) meet Mud (McConaughey) while exploring an island on the Mississippi River. Mud needs to rebuild a boat so he and Juniper (Witherspoon) can escape. On the run from the law, Mud is wanted for murder against a man who physically abused Juniper.
Though the film moves slow, there’s ample time to learn about the backgrounds of each character giving a fully fleshed out film. Seeing the demise of Ellis’ parents’ relationship helps you understand why he’s helping Mud with the woman he loves.
McConaughey gives a quiet yet powerful performance and allows Mud to treat both boys as real humans and not just children.
Final say: Southern brilliance. ★★★★☆
