Beautifully showing how people can change if they learn to open their hearts, Stage Mother is an emotional comedy that hits in all the right places.
After the death of her estranged son, Maybelline Metcalf (Jacki Weaver) travels to his funeral in San Francisco where she finds out she’s inherited his drag club. Choosing to honor him, Maybelline works with his partner Nathan (Adrian Grenier) to revamp the club and keep it open despite knowing her husband Jeb (Hugh Thompson) would disagree.
Weaver is delightful in the lead role. With her southern accent, she’s got all the charm and makes you fall in love as she decides to change her ways.
With so much negativity around the queer community and its drag queens, this film shows that everyone is just looking for kindness.
Final say: Drag isn’t dangerous. ★★★★☆
