While the board game behind this movie is still a joy to play, Battleship loses the essence of its source material by adding aliens, a bad script and weak CGI.
During the 2012 RIMPAC exercise, five alien ships land in the water off the shores of Hawaii and close off space with a small group of Naval ships. After facing many casualties, headstrong Lieutenant Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) becomes the highest-ranking officer.
Though there are some nods to the boardgame, there’s not much that can be done with its simple premise. However, jumping right to aliens doesn’t seem like the most logical choice. Not only does the storyline go awry, but the dialogue is terrible and clichéd.
The alien ships look good, but green screen moments easily take you out of the story.
Final say: Sink this Battleship. ★★☆☆☆
