While being inspired by the legendary show but not actually being a remake, Bewitched suffers from lackluster humor and a forced romance.
With his film career failing, Jack Wyatt (Will Ferrell) agrees to star in a television remake of Bewitched. He finds his costar in Isabel Bigelow (Nicole Kidman), who he doesn’t realize is an actual witch trying to live a normal life.
Kidman is wonderfully charming and though Shirley MacLaine’s character isn’t developed enough, she plays it brilliantly. However, Ferrell is deeply unfunny, and the film feels more like a vanity project where he suffers exactly like his character. There’s no chemistry between Kidman and Ferrell, which makes it hard to root for the couple.
The modern twist on the story is good in theory, but it doesn’t play out like it should.
Final say: Bothered and bewildered. ★★☆☆☆
