Despite no one asking for a remake, Tim Burton’s reimagining of Planet of the Apes is fraught with one-dimensional characters and bad CGI.

Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) crash lands on a planet run by humanoid apes where humans are used as slaves. Ari (Helena Bonham Carter) is a chimpanzee that is disgusted by the way humans are treated. She and Leo team up to lead a rebellion of the slaves against their ape owners.

The makeup is the high point of the film. Compared to the 1968 original film, these apes look closer to the real thing and can express more emotion through their looks. But that doesn’t balance out the effects used in the film’s climax and confusing ending.

Meanwhile, Tim Roth’s General Thade doesn’t show any emotion but anger.

Final say: A Planet to stay far away from. ★☆☆☆☆
