Following the life of Oscar Wilde until his tragic end, Wilde shows the risks of fame and homosexuality in a time when it was highly unacceptable in society.
Oscar Wilde (Stephen Fry) is rising in the literary society as his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray and play The Importance of Being Earnest make waves. John Douglas (Tom Wilkinson), the father of Oscar’s lover Bosie (Jude Law), brings indecency charges against Oscar.
Fry is the embodiment of Wilde with his similar looks and the way he presents the character. You’ll feel for this genius of a man whose accomplishments at the time were negated by his personal life.
The story shows the harm of the past in persecution of those unlike the common man, which continues to be an awful threat in today’s world.
Final say: Wilde’s legacy lives on. ★★★★☆
