The Beach has beautiful cinematography, but its melodramatic story and mixed acting performances make this a trip you won’t want to take.
Richard (Leonardo DiCaprio) is traveling in Thailand when he meets Daffy (Robert Carlyle), an eccentric figure who tells him about a community living on a remote island. Richard and two fellow travelers (Virginie Ledoyen & Guillaume Canet) travel there but start to notice cracks in the perfection.
DiCaprio majorly overacts in the lead role. It’s too much compared to his fellow actors but may also be due to most of their weak acting skills. Tilda Swinton finds the balance, though her character arc is predictable.
With so much happening in the story, there’s a tonal switch that you can predict will happen but the two juxtapose each other more than they should.
Final say: Stay off this beach. ★☆☆☆☆
