Starting strong and then quickly losing its footing, The Revengers’ Comedies is dark with a love story that doesn’t fit in quite right.
Henry Bell (Sam Neill) and Karen Knightly (Helena Bonham Carter) meet each other by chance when they both go to Tower Bridge to commit suicide. After talking about the people who drove them to their madness, they agree to take revenge for the other.
It’s a zany plot that wouldn’t go over well today – and perhaps didn’t go over well during its release with it struggling to find distribution. The romance between Henry and his target Imogen (Kristin Scott Thomas) is predictable but handled quite oddly with much of Imogen’s cheating happening in the open.
Bonham Carter is fantastic as the deranged Karen. She easily slips into disguises and keeps you guessing.
Final say: Rotten revenge. ★★☆☆☆
