Though it doesn’t have many hard-hitting moments, Sunburn is a breezy look at young students visiting the U.S. with a charming Cillian Murphy in the lead role.
Davin (Murphy) flees with a group of Irish students going to work in Long Island for the summer when he accidentally gets a girl pregnant. He starts to fall for Aideen (Paloma Baeza) who challenges him for decisions he’s made. Robert (Barry Ward) falls in love with the woman (Ingeborga Dapkunaite) he’s working for.
The story and character development stays pretty much surface level throughout. While it’s a coming-of-age film, none of the characters seem to have moments that really change them. However, it is a great look at the portrayal of teen summers in another country where they aren’t inhibited by family rules.
Final say: It’s sunny, but there’s no burn. ★★★☆☆
