It may be far from the strongest in the Shrek franchise, but Shrek Forever After is a solid ending that recalls why we fell in love with the main characters from the start.

Missing his old life, Shrek (Mike Myers) gets tempted by Rumpelstiltskin (Walt Dohrn) into becoming the ogre he used to be. With Rumpelstiltskin’s tricky ways, Shrek must share a true love’s kiss with an alternate Fiona (Cameron Diaz) to break the contract.

For this being the final entry in the series, we’re introduced to several new characters who are nonexistent in the regular timeline, and we lose the dynamics of the core group we’ve come to love. Watching Shrek and Fiona fall in love again is heartwarming. It’s just that the plot works better for a middle film than a finale.

Final say: Maybe there’ll be more? ★★★☆☆
