Faithfully adapting its source material, Thérèse Raquin, a fantastic core cast can’t save In Secret from its own misery.

Sent as a young girl to live with her aunt, Madame Raquin (Jessica Lange), Thérèse (Elizabeth Olsen) is married off to her first cousin Camille (Tom Felton). When they move to Paris, Camille reunites with his childhood friend Laurent (Oscar Isaac), with whom Thérèse begins an affair.

Olsen and Isaac have fantastic chemistry, but their characters’ romance is rushed into with hardly any buildup. Later in the film, it crashes down as fast as it started. Instead of levels, we get extremes.

Lange, on the other hand, embraces the stages her character goes through and provides a captivating performance. There’s still more the script could’ve given to Madame Raquin, but Lange perfectly handles what she’s given.

Final say: A tired storyline. ★★☆☆☆
